Cultural Capital
Cultural Capital is absolutely everywhere in our World.
It is in our houses, in our school, our street, our town, across the nation, across the globe.
It’s inside all of us!
Cultural capital is often thought of as ‘getting on in life’ or ‘social status’, i.e. being able to perform well in school, knowing how to talk in different social groups or societies, accessing higher education and being successful in work or a career.
It is important to recognise that everyone has cultural capital .
This comes from the experiences and opportunities we have within our family home, extended family/friend networks and within school.
Not every child experiences ‘positive’ cultural capital and not everyone has equal amounts…
Key to Cultural Capital is curiosity and curiosity grows and grows. The urge, impulse, desire to find out more. Finding out more about ‘myself’, where I feel safe and confident and strong, how I manage my own wellbeing and also ensure I grow as a person.
